Your first eyelash extensions appointment is coming up? MONLIS Munich explains what to expect — from the consultation to the procedure, aftercare, and the most common beginner questions.
What happens during eyelash extensions?
A single synthetic lash is attached to each of your natural lashes with a specialized adhesive. It sounds painstaking — and it is. A full set takes 90 to 120 minutes, with the stylist working lash by lash using fine tweezers under a magnification lamp.
You lie with your eyes closed on a treatment bed the entire time. Many clients fall asleep — the process is painless and only requires you to stay still.
Techniques at a glance
Classic (1:1)
One extension per natural lash. The result is subtle, natural, and practical for everyday life. Ideal if you want to look like you were born with longer, fuller lashes — without the dramatic effect of volume sets.
Volume (2D–6D)
A fan of two to six ultra-thin extensions is placed on each natural lash. The result is noticeably fuller and more striking. The individual fibers are so thin that the weight per lash is barely more than with the classic technique.
Mega Volume (10D+)
For maximum dramatic effect. Suitable for special occasions or clients who prefer a very expressive look. Requires healthy, strong natural lashes as a foundation.
Tip: If unsure, start with the classic technique. If you want more volume, your stylist can upgrade to 2D or 3D at your next refill.
Before your appointment: preparation
- Come without eye makeup — residue makes bonding harder and shortens wear time
- Remove contact lenses — you will have your eyes closed for 90 to 120 minutes
- Avoid excessive caffeine right before — it can make eyes twitch
- Allow two hours — the treatment cannot be rushed without compromising quality
Aftercare
First 24 hours
- No water on the lashes — the adhesive needs time to fully cure
- No steam (sauna, hot showers with heavy steam)
- Do not rub or pull at the lashes
- Sleep on your back if possible
First two weeks
- No oil-based eye makeup removers — oil dissolves the adhesive
- No waterproof mascara
- Gently comb lashes each morning with a clean spoolie brush
- Be gentle with the eye area when washing — no rubbing
Good to know: Natural lashes have a life cycle of 60 to 90 days. Extensions fall out together with the natural lash — this is normal, not a sign of poor quality. That is why you need a refill every two to three weeks.
Longevity and refills
A full set typically lasts two to three weeks before a refill is needed. Longevity depends on your natural lash cycle, aftercare compliance, and skin type (oily skin dissolves adhesive faster).
A refill takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs significantly less than a full set. Regular refills every two to three weeks maintain a consistent look.
Common concerns — answered honestly
Do extensions damage natural lashes?
Not when applied correctly. Each extension is placed on a single natural lash — not multiple at once. Problems arise when extensions that are too heavy are placed on weak natural lashes, or when clients pull at them.
Can I swim with extensions?
Yes — after the first 24 hours. Chlorine and salt water may slightly shorten wear time, but extensions are generally swim-safe. Rinse lashes with fresh water after swimming and let them air-dry.

First eyelash extensions at MONLIS in Munich
In our studios at Goetheplatz, Karlstraße, and Westpark, we take extra time for first-time clients. We discuss your preferences, show example photos of different techniques, and select length, curl, and volume together. If this is your first time trying extensions, we recommend starting with a natural look — you can always add more volume at your next refill.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
When applied correctly by a trained technician, extensions do not damage natural lashes. Damage occurs only from improper application (too-heavy extensions, poor isolation) or bad aftercare habits like pulling or picking at lashes. At MONLIS, our technicians select extension weight and length to match each natural lash’s capacity.
Most clients find mascara unnecessary because extensions already provide length and fullness. If you want extra definition, use only water-based, extension-safe mascara on the tips. Never use waterproof mascara — the oil-based remover needed to take it off dissolves the lash adhesive.
Most clients schedule refills every 2.5 to 3 weeks. At this interval, about 40–60% of the extensions are still in place, and the refill takes 45–75 minutes. Waiting longer than 4 weeks usually means too few extensions remain for a simple refill, requiring a full new set instead.
After the initial 24–48 hour curing period, you can swim, sauna, and shower normally. Chlorinated and salt water may slightly reduce retention, so rinse the lashes with fresh water after swimming and brush them gently once dry.
Individual extensions falling out is completely normal — it means your natural lash completed its growth cycle and shed. Do not try to reattach it yourself. Simply wait for your next refill appointment, where your lash artist will replace all shed lashes.
