Intimate area sugaring — gentle, effective and less painful than waxing. MONLIS explains the procedure, gives honest answers about pain, and shares aftercare tips.
Intimate area sugaring: what you should know before your first appointment
Deciding to have the intimate area professionally hair-free is something many approach with uncertainty. That is normal. Most questions revolve around three topics: Does it hurt? What exactly happens? And how do I prepare? This guide answers all three — honestly and without sugarcoating.
Why sugaring and not waxing?
In the intimate area, sugaring is the gentler method. The sugar paste is removed in the direction of hair growth (not against it, as with waxing), which brings three practical advantages:
- Fewer broken hairs — hair is removed with the root
- Lower risk of ingrown hairs — a common problem in the bikini zone
- Less skin irritation — especially relevant in an area with thin, sensitive skin
The paste itself consists of sugar, water, and lemon juice. No chemicals, no fragrances, no preservatives.
How the treatment works
- Consultation: Your aesthetician asks which zone should be treated (bikini line, extended bikini, or Brazilian) and whether there are any skin sensitivities.
- Preparation: The skin is cleansed and dusted with a light powder so the paste grips optimally.
- Treatment: The body-temperature paste is applied to small sections and swiftly removed. Your aesthetician works in segments — each pull takes fractions of a second.
- Aftercare: A soothing lotion or aloe vera gel is applied. You receive care instructions for the following days.
The entire treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes for a bikini line, 30 to 45 minutes for a Brazilian.
The honest question: how much does it hurt?
It hurts. Not unbearably, but noticeably — especially the first time. The skin in the intimate area is thinner than on the legs, and hairs sit deeper. The good news: it gets better each time.
At the first sugaring, pain is strongest because hairs are still thick and firmly anchored. From the second or third appointment, hairs grow back finer, roots sit more loosely, and the treatment becomes noticeably more comfortable.
Tip: If you are pain-sensitive, avoid scheduling just before or during menstruation — skin is more sensitive then. The middle of the cycle is ideal.
Preparation: what to do beforehand
- Hair should be at least 5 mm long — about two weeks after the last shave
- No exfoliation on treatment day
- No body lotion — greasy products prevent the paste from gripping
- Wear comfortable clothing: loose cotton underwear and wide pants
- Come freshly showered — your aesthetician will additionally cleanse the area
Aftercare: the first 48 hours
- No tight clothing that rubs against the skin
- No exercise with heavy sweating
- No swimming pool, sauna, or hot bath
- No scented products in the treated zone
- No intimacy in the first 24 hours — the skin is irritated and more susceptible to irritation
From day three: begin gentle exfoliation every two to three days to prevent ingrown hairs. An exfoliating glove in the shower is sufficient.
Bikini line, extended bikini, or Brazilian?
| Option | What is removed | Duration | Price range (Munich) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bikini line | Hair visible outside underwear | 15–20 min | €20–35 |
| Extended bikini | Bikini line + upper area, narrower strip | 20–30 min | €30–45 |
| Brazilian | Complete — front, back, inner sides | 30–45 min | €40–60 |
How often should you repeat?
Every three to five weeks — depending on your individual hair growth. With regular sugaring, intervals tend to lengthen because hair grows back slower and finer.
Good to know: Do not shave between appointments. Shaving cuts hair at the surface and makes it blunt and coarse. At your next sugaring, you would then face denser, rougher hair again.

The first session is the most uncomfortable, with most clients rating it 5–7 out of 10. By the third or fourth regular appointment, discomfort typically drops to 2–3 as hair regrows finer and roots weaken. Scheduling after your period and avoiding caffeine beforehand can reduce sensitivity.
Results last three to five weeks. With regular sessions every four to five weeks, many clients notice finer regrowth and longer smooth periods over time. Some areas may eventually stop producing hair altogether.
Bikini line removes hair along the swimwear edges only. Brazilian removes most hair from the front, genital area and between the buttocks (a small strip can be left). Hollywood is complete removal of all intimate area hair.
Yes, if you wear a tampon or menstrual cup. However, skin sensitivity is higher during menstruation, so many clients prefer to schedule their appointment for the week after their period.
Begin gentle exfoliation 48 hours after your appointment, using a soft washcloth or mild scrub two to three times per week. Apply unscented moisturizer daily and avoid shaving between sugaring sessions. Wearing breathable cotton underwear also helps.
